Another member of the 2019 intake into the Direct Selling Hall of Fame is someone who has created an incredible story in the direct selling space and has significantly impacted lives around the world.

It’s easy to credit distributors and field leaders alone for the success of great companies, but our next inductee built his legacy on the corporate side.

Born in 1957, he joined the direct selling company that would define his career as a Business Systems Analyst and worked his way up through management, eventually becoming President in 1995.

In 2000, he became co-CEO of the same company during a turbulent and uncertain economic period. He spearheaded the separation of the business from its parent company, Citigroup, guiding it away at a critical time to protect its customers, distributors, and employees.

In 2010, he led the company onto the New York Stock Exchange in one of the most successful initial public offerings of its time. The offering was oversubscribed by a factor of twenty-two—an extraordinary achievement for any business, let alone one in direct sales, particularly in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

He and his co-CEO are widely credited not only with changing the company’s direction, but with protecting and safeguarding the incomes and livelihoods of distributors and employees at a time when the business itself might not have survived.

Under his leadership, cash flow to the network increased by 70%, ensuring distributors were properly rewarded for their efforts, with more than $700 million paid out to the field in a single year. One of his lasting legacies is the genuine partnership the company maintains with its representatives. Just outside the corporate headquarters stands a large statue bearing the mission statement: “Dedicated to giving people from all walks of life a chance to live their dreams.”

The company brought affordable insurance to families across the United States and transformed how these financial products were sold. It has become a major success story in the direct selling industry. For him to step into the role of co-CEO—previously held for many years by the iconic founder, Art Williams—and then lead the company forward with such impact is a testament to his leadership. That company is Primerica, from which he retired in 2015.

In June 2019, at the Primerica annual convention, he made a surprise appearance—his first since retiring four years earlier. The reception he received from the audience said everything about the impact he has had and the respect he commands. In front of 45,000 distributors at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, he was welcomed as an icon—one whose leadership principles continue to inspire the profession.

That respect is well deserved. A corporate leader who is a true hero in our profession.

This video captures the reception he received that day, along with insights from those who know him best, as we congratulate and welcome into the Direct Selling Hall of Fame: Mr John Addison.
